ABSTRACT

Aim: The present study aimed to estimate the total carbon sequestration potential of a 20-years-old teak (Tectona grandis) plantation forest spread over an area of 23 ha (in Odisha under Eastern Ghats stretch) through analysis of above ground and below ground biomass carbon of trees and soil organic carbon (SOC) stock.Methodology: The sampling was carried out during May to July 2017. Random non-destructive quadrate method was used for vegetation analysis. Based on the girth, height, basal area and bio volume of trees, the above ground carbon (AGC), below ground carbon (BGC) and total carbon storage in biomass (CSB) of teak plantation forest was calculated. Similarly, soil samples were taken by a soil core sampler at different depths and based on their organic carbon, bulk density, stone and gravel contents, soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks of soil was calculated. Results: The total SOC stock and CSB of the entire teak plantation forest was 489.21 t and 6670 t, respectively, across an area of 23 ha. Taking two carbon pools into account, the total carbon sequestration (TCS) of teak plantation forest patch was 7159.21 t, which arrived to be 311.27 t ha-1 with AGC of 230.16 t ha-1 and BGC of 59.84 t ha-1 and TOC stock of 21.27 t ha-1. The highest contribution in terms of carbon storage was established by above ground carbon (74%) followed by below ground carbon (19%) and SOC (7%). Interpretation: The current study reflects that teak plantation forest has rich potential of carbon sequestration not only in tree biomass but also in the SOC form and this plantation can act as a potent reservoir of carbon in the Eastern Ghats of India

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: Hypertension is a health problem of global priority. Screening and early diagnosis is important to plan appropriate interventions. The present study objectives were to screen the urban population aged 30 yr and above and diagnose for hypertension and to identify the factors associated with poor screening for hypertension, if any. Methods: A community-based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in urban field practice area of a tertiary care hospital in Puducherry, India, among individuals aged 30 yr and above. Individuals were asked if they have tested themselves for hypertension in the past two years. Pretested questionnaire was used for data collection. Data collection was done during regular working time of the health centre. All eligible participants from consecutive households were included till the required sample size of 394 was achieved. Results: Of the 394 individuals interviewed, 252 (64%) had undergone screening for hypertension. The prevalence of self-reported hypertension among those screened was 26.2 per cent with no significant gender-wise differences. Screening for hypertension was better among females (71.6%) as compared to males (55.2%). Population who were at a higher risk of not getting screened for hypertension were relatively younger (30-44 yr) individuals and males. Interpretation & conclusions: The prevalence of self-reported hypertension among those screened was 26.2 per cent [95% confidence interval (21.1-31.9)]. Screening needs to be targeted more towards males and younger population.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To report the distribution and trends of types of organisms and antibiotic susceptibility of the bacterial isolates obtained from patients with microbial keratitis. Methods: Microbiology records of culture-positive microbial keratitis that underwent a diagnostic corneal scraping and cultures were reviewed. Fungal, bacterial, and parasitic culture results and antibiotic susceptibility profile of bacteria were analyzed and comparisons were made between two halves of the study period (2007–2010 vs. 2011–2014). Results: A total of 3981 corneal scrapings were processed during the 8-year study period. Pathogen was recovered in culture in 1914 (48.1%) samples. Fungi, bacteria, and parasites constituted 38.7%, 60%, and 1.3% of the total isolates, respectively. The common fungal isolates were Aspergillus spp. (224/868, 25.8%) and Fusarium spp. (200/868, 23.0%), while common Gram-positive bacteria were Streptococcus pneumoniae (217/1125, 19.3%) and Staphylococcus aureus (185/1125, 16.4%), and common Gram-negative bacteria was Pseudomonas spp. (99/219, 45.2%). There was no significant difference in proportion of bacterial (P = 0.225) and fungal (P = 0.421) keratitis between the first half and second half of the study period. There was a significant increase in proportion of Gram-positive isolates (P = 0.015) [353/758 (46.6%) vs. 772/1482 (52.1%)] and decrease in proportion of Gram-negative organisms (P = 0.044) [88/758 (11.6%) vs. 131/1482 (8.8%)] in the recent years. In-vitro antibiotic susceptibility testing showed decrease in susceptibility to moxifloxacin for Pseudomonas spp. (P = 0.016) in recent years. Conclusion: Prevalence of fungal and bacterial keratitis has remained unchanged over the years. This study shows a significant increase in Gram-positive bacterial infection and decrease in Gram-negative bacterial infection of the cornea in the recent years.

ABSTRACT

Background: The present study was conducted to investigate the attitude of drug addicts under withdrawal treatment towards oral health so that required interventions can be planned for the good health of those who are in rehabilitation phase of life. Materials and methods: The present study comprised of 30 drug addicts (all males) admitted in the rehabilitation centre in Punjab, India. Data so obtained was subjected to analysis using SPSS version 16. Percentage and mean ± standard deviation was calculated and Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. Results: Most of the participants (97%) were involved in more than one type of drug abuse and most of them used more than one type of route of drug substance administration. Regarding brushing frequency, about 17% not brushed their teeth regularly and 83% once a day and regarding the use of mouthwashes, 38% never used mouthwash, 59% used occasionally, 3% reported once a day. Most of the participants 92% never used floss to clean their teeth. Significant p value (<0.05) was found on statistical analysis of periodontal status, carious and fractured teeth in relation to oral hygiene practices among drug addicts. Conclusion: The result of the present study emphasis for more attention in designing and implementing oral health programs for addicts.
